Tumbleweed

For reference, I include the Tumbleweed builders. These guys are kind of the gold-standard for the mobile tiny house movement. Much pricier than I am willing to bite off, but there are a lot of good ideas tied to these that we can utilize. I’m super curious how the impending law change will affect the wheeled market. I suspect they will branch out into larger units.

Lowe’s Sheds

Lowe’s sells a ton of various wood-frame sheds and gardening houses that are ripe for conversion to a country shack. I’d love to tear into one of these and wire, plumb, insulate and panel it as a first project. Relatively cheap way to get immediate shelter at a property, letting you focus on interior finishing during the rains. A 12′ x 16′ (192′ sq) or 12′ x 20′ (240′ sq) would be quite a lot of space to play with.

Here’s a short video of the interior of one (unfinished). A Home Depot model to compare.

Woman Converts Barn Shed into 192 Sq. Ft. Tiny Home

Though this was done as a full “I’m living here till I die” solution by an older woman, and might be a bit of overkill for what we have in mind, there are a lot of pictures (some are potato-quality) that give a good idea of how such a space might be laid out. She even has a full fridge in there!

That being said, I can totally see how she could set herself up for retirement in that thing. It’s densely livable. The sort of thing my mother would have adored, herself.

The Humanure Handbook

The definitive authority on making composting toilets and running a very easy composting process that results in amazing garden compost over a 2-year cycle, and eliminates the need for sewers or septic tanks on the property.

A full version of the handbook is available online in PDF format if you want to check it out.

I bought a physical copy at Amazon as well.

Welcome Randy!

Just added Randy as an editor here. Welcome to the project! 🙂

Tiny stoves

Interestingly, a quick search on Amazon turns up a number of these sorts of wood stoves. Cheap, and probably seriously overpowered heat-wise for a tiny house. Probably perfect for what we are looking at! Couple that with a little microwave and toaster oven, and you would be able to cook and heat the place.

AGA tiny range & ovens

aga-companion This is frickin’ adorable, and I love the two oven thing. It’s just under 24″ square on top, and it’s called dual-fuel. It says it’s electric and can use natural gas or LPG (propane?). Very cool, but no price here… holy &*%^… a google search tells me these lovelies sell for $5,700!!! If anyone sees options that are priced for real people, please do let me know.

Washer/dryer combo

This! Or, something like it. Worth considering. About $650. Electric, not gas. Neat.

LandBook: The small landowner’s guide to buying, improving, maintaining and selling rural land

OK, I have a few books inbound now, and need to stop and digest, but this one looked like it was right up our alley as we try to determine how to buy a parcel of land. Everyone raves about it, and it was published in 2014, so it’s not years out of date.

I’ll report back once I get a chance to dig into it!

Post: Land buying tips

This is just a random post I ran across, but some of his points are very good ones, and are food for thought as we move ahead. I’ll reproduce the entire text here for reference, since this looks like a personal site that could easily vanish.
