EZ Log kit sheds and cabins – thinking about one of these for a glass studio here

This is something I’ve looked into as a possible way to put in a small glass art studio here on our property.  The price is fairly reasonable, it can be brought in to set up in areas where a fully assembled shed or cabin might not fit.  And it can be put on a foundation, or, as I saw at the last Mother Earth News Fair in Oregon this summer, it can be put on a trailer frame.  They had a couple of these at the fair and they were actually pretty cool.

Looks like they are also going to be at the Portland Mini-Maker Faire this weekend.  That’s a bit far, but maybe that means they will be making the mini-maker faire rounds in other areas as well.  Maybe ours?  I’d certainly go have a look in person if they did.  For what you are getting, I think their prices are pretty reasonable.   Here is the catalog link.

Links for stalking the wild and wary rural property…

Hello, everyone!  I told Mike I’d post these here when I got a few minutes – a couple are links for finding out more about a property that you think you might be interested in.  (We have more links somewhere in our backups from when we were looking over the rural property we ended up purchasing.  I’ll post those when I find them again.)  The rest of these are just a handful of pages I came across that have at least a little information on setting up tiny home communities in this part of the country, mostly posted by folks who have done so, or are in the process of it.  Hope they are of help.

Building permits in Snohomish County

This is intriguing:

Q: Do small accessory storage type buildings require a building permit? A: You do not need a building permit for a one-story tool shed, playhouse, storage type building that does not exceed 200 square feet in building area (wall to wall) and carports with two or more sides open that do not exceed 200 square feet. However, properties located outside of the county Urban Growth Areas (UGAs) are allowed to have buildings up to 400 square feet without the requirement for a building permit. To determine if your property is located within or outside of a UGA, please contact PDS at (425) 388-3311. (Also, see PDS Bulletin #74, Common Building Permit Exemptions.)

136 sq. ft. Molecule Tiny Home

This. Though I’m not likely to drop a bunch of cash on a pre-built tiny house, this one has a ton of very good ideas that we might draw upon. The stairs in particular are super cool. I also really like the idea of that little storage loft over the front door; super clever use of space. The bathroom is using a composting toilet, and is really put together well.

Theres a little walk-through video that explores it. Really surprising how much useable space they have created in such a tiny (136′ sq!) space. The footprint is 8′ x 17′ in case you’re curious.

Dryflush – another toilet option

Seems like there are a number of odd toilet options out there. Had never heard of this one. Watched the video, and I’m still really not sure how this is operating. Seems to be a vacuum/liner thing with some sort of sealed inner bag that only needs changing every few months. Huh. Runs around $450, so would be much cheaper than an incinerator, if one were inclined in that direction. I can certainly see why someone with a tiny house on wheels might be.

Create 25SF Storage With These Tiny House Stairs

Here’s a good how-to on building box stairs with storage built right in. I really like the idea of ripping out the existing stairs in a shed and doing something like these.

How To Build A Mortgage-Free Small House For $5,900

This article talks about a small building project that these people did (from scratch) that used a bunch of free and super cheap materials sourced from return sales and Craigslist. Interesting primarily for the step-by-step pictures that give you a feel for what’s involved work-wise.

Yirego Drumi

This is a really odd and potentially interesting idea. NO idea how well it works, but I’m going to dig a bit and see if I can determine the availability. Small loads, but totally off-grid. Looks like it’s really meant for delicates, so probably not a viable thing for your only laundry option.

Looks to be a crowdfunded thing running a little over $160. Yirego.com is the site.

Tiny feet

sqftSquare feet, that is. Here’s a good breakout of Tiny House (trailer types) square footage with some layouts that help visualize things.
